In the aftermath of the humiliating electoral defeat, Maoist leaders were expected to take stock of the party's political course and adopt some serious measures to save the party from sliding into disintegration or oblivion.
But the Maoists did not.
The central committee meeting held last month was rather used by the feuding factions to blame each other for the defeat -- an exercise that blatantly violates the Leninist principle of party organization.
The party establishment led by Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' blamed India's 'invisible hand' and the political line championed by party 'ideologue' Baburam Bhattarai for the party's downfall.
Bhattarai's followers, on the other hand, passed the buck to the ‘centralized’ leadership of the party chairman, his flip-flop on the ideological front, 'opaque' financial dealings, his indulgence in 'material luxuries’ and the 'cult of personality' developing around him.
Instead of charting a new political course through brainstorming and critical and honest review of the past, the weeks-long meeting of the jumbo central committee thus ended up aggravating the mutual distrust and deepening factionalism.
